ATOKA, Okla. (KXII) – Its been a life of public service for Oklahoma’s longest running speaker of the house, Charles McCall, who ran and operated his family’s fourth generation owned bank before serving on Atoka’s Industrial Development Authority and being elected as mayor in 2005.
“The proudest days probably for me is just a day when I can help somebody in my district, make government work for them, the government exists to serve the people,” Former Speaker McCall said.
McCall was then elected in 2012 to serve District 22 in the Oklahoma House of Representatives. He was later elected Speaker of the House by his peers just four years later.
While in office, McCall worked on several key pieces of legislation to boost Oklahoma’s economy, increase state reserves and improve education.
“Set policy that puts the people of Oklahoma in the best position to succeed at the core family level but also the individual level,” McCall added.
McCall says he envisions a future for Oklahoma full of prosperity, hard work and collaboration.
“I hope we’ll continue to work together in this region collaborating and focusing on things we can agree on and make those things happen and continue to have conversations about the things that we’re not quite there yet,” McCall added.
He says he plans to continue to serve the people in his community, even after his time as Speaker is done.
“I’ll continue to work to help people, whether its in banking, or through my church, public service might be something I might be continuing to consider more of, but for right now I’m going to enjoy time with my family,” McCall stated.
Representative Kyle Hilbert will succeed McCall as Oklahoma Speaker of the House in January.
